The history behind Piri Piri sauce – The Portuguese were prolific explorers, on their many journeys of discovery they discovered many new herbs and spices that have resulted in a truly unique cuisine in Portugal. Piri Piri is derived from a tiny chilli pepper that the Portuguese introduced from Angola and Mozambique with a mixture of other herbs and spices. It results in the infamous sauce that we use to marinade and baste our chicken pieces, giving you our saucy and succulent Piri Piri Chicken.
Piri Piri Express believes that our fiery feasts are meant to be dished up with personality. We are famous for serving everything with hearty Portuguese passion. “O Galo De Barcelos” – The Rooster from Barcelosy – it’s the right way.
“O Galo De Barcelos”
The rooster is the unofficial symbol of Portugal. The city of Barcelos is located just east of Braga, the legend is so old that no one knows for sure its real source. The most famous story starts at a banquet that was being held by a rich landowner in Barcelos where a valuable piece of silver was stolen and one of the guests was accused of the theft. He was tried by the court and found guilty, despite overwhelming evidence against him, he protested his innocence. The magistrate granted the man a final chance to prove his case, seeing a rooster in a basket nearby he said “If I am innocent, the rooster will crow” The rooster crowed and the prisoner was freed.
